Description |
Black hardbound scrapbook made by Henry William Hitchcock containing photographs of his time spent fighting in France during WWI. Hitchcock was a member of the Fort Omaha 2nd Balloon Company. Contains several images from combat, sites seen in various French towns, and also candid images of the company. Many are identified with first names (Moe, Peck, Tubes, Ed, Chink, Jerry, Childs, Phil, Billy, Corcoran, Flood, O'Leary, Goof, Whit, Joe, Baldy, Von, Smiling Jack, Brownie, Shorty, Ingling, Black, Lemon. Several are identified as "me." Images toward the end depict the company's return journey home, where it seems they stopped in northern Africa. Henry William Hitchcock was born in Michigan City, Indiana in 1896, and left school at the University of Michigan in 1917 to join the military. He was assigned to the Second Observation Balloon Company at Fort Omaha, and was stationed in France. After the war, he moved to Santa Barbara, where he worked in real estate, owned a Packard dealership, and was business manager for the Dodgers baseball club in the California League. He also ranched and owned a lemon and avocado farm in Carpenteria, CA. |
